The revered and somewhat putrid tradition of pressuring an international artist to do a shoey on stage has caught plenty of flack in recent years, with Aussie crowds drawing large criticism for attempting to force the likes of Tyler, The Creator, Jack Harlow, Post Malone and countless more to succumb to their will. UK singer and notorious spitter Harry Styles is the latest to fall victim to the hallowed pastime, and unfortunately, it was without a doubt one of the worst renditions of the act we’ve seen in recent memory.
Fan-captured video from Styles’ recent gig in Perth shows him almost immediately folding upon initial chants from the crowd, taking off his shoe and filling it with a drink before attempting to down it as he proclaimed, “This is one of the most disgusting traditions I’ve ever [heard of]” (no arguments here). We say “attempting to”, however, because no alcohol even went into old mate’s mouth. Still, he made sure to milk it for the crowd, joking as he said, “I feel ashamed of myself. It feels so personal! Such an intimate moment to be shared with so many people! I’ll be discussing this with my therapist at length. At length!”

The on-stage antic comes following the singer’s win for ‘Album of the Year’ at the recent Grammy Awards, along with his tone deaf comments acceptance speech about how “This doesn’t happen to people like me”. It seems he’s incapable of staying out of the headlines right now, but here’s hoping the next time he ends up on the front page, a shoe isn’t at all involved.
