The fanatical fandom that is the viewership for HBO’s The Last Of Us was totally thrown into a tail spin this past weekend, the season finale for the critically acclaimed series managing to break our hearts in six ways from Sunday. Although we knew what was coming (or, if you managed to stay away from spoilers, bravo), it was still an absolute gut-punch, Ellie’s chaotic birth, Joel’s murderous rampage and the terrible lie the leading man tells his adopted daughter at the end helping to cement the first season of the video-game adaptation as one of the best of all television.
Understandably, fans are already chomping at the bit for season two, desperate to see iconic scenes from the 2020 game in live action (except for that one scene involving a golf club, you know the one). It’s been widely debated as to how exactly they’ll adapt the game, however, with its large runtime, interwoven narratives and sheer scope far bigger than the first entry in the franchise. Now, however, the creators of the popular show and game have spilled the beans on just how they plan on going about it, which will come as music to the ears of any fan of the Joel and Ellie saga.
Speaking with GQ UK, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann were asked whether season two will include the sequel’s full story, to which they replied “No. No way. It’s more than one season.”
They also hinted at how faithful the upcoming seasons will be to the source material, with Druckmann stating that, “Some of the stuff I’m most excited for are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version. And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way” with Mazin concluding, “It’s quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later. And perhaps different kinds.”

No doubt that last statement will satisfy critics’ main gripe about the show and its lack of the monstrous infected. Here’s hoping we get these new seasons sooner rather than later. For now, check out the full preview for episode nine above along with the trailer for part two of the beloved game below.
