After two decades of high-octane action, gravity-defying chase sequences, and a roided up Vin Diesel repeatedly saying “It’s about family”, the beloved Fast & Furious franchise is about to reach its final lap with the release of Fast X. It’s a franchise that first united gearheads and Need For Speed fans in the early 2000s, and after several reinventions, it became a global phenomenon that transcended the racing genre, most recently with the space-faring F9 in 2021.
Now, we’ve gotten the first trailer for the upcoming epic, with the full reveal for Fast X being released this past month. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, John Cena and Ludacris, alongside newcomers like Brie Larson and Rita Moreno, the upcoming film centres on Aquaman‘s Jason Momoa as main antagonist Dante Reyes, who comes to exact his revenge on Diesel’s Dominic Toretto (who, funnily enough, plays Groot in the Marvel Universe). And in accordance with previous entries in the franchise, his plan is rather effective, with the Toretto clan quickly being scattered around the globe as they all battle to stay alive.
Then ensues your classic Fast & Furious trailer, with numerous explosions, car races and melodramatic monologues helping to drive home the direness of the conflict at hand. There is an added sense of finality in the trailer that hasn’t been present in past iterations, most likely as it is the beginning of the end for the Fast franchise, with Fast X being the first half of its concluding instalment. It’s going to be an end of an era for the action genre as a whole, but considering that the first film came out over twenty years ago, it’s safe to say they’ve had one hell of a ride.
