Anyone who’s delved into Sydney’s R&B scene would be all too familiar with Inner West songwriter, Soma. Earning a reputation for her singular Neo-Soul creations that are rife with feeling and allure, the young artist on the rise has slowly but steadily building herself a wealth of fans hanging off her every release, and today that discography grows with the arrival of her latest single, ‘Changes’ (which we’re premiering today).
Comprised of gentle piano lines and a fiery, but subtle, guitar line, the soundscape Soma sings atop is minimal and restrained, but the emotion it packs is enough to rival even the most textural of arrangements. And in accordance with past singles ‘Trust’, ‘Alien’ and Bloom’, her vocals are precise and hard-hitting, the eclectic artist channelling the likes of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott as she reaches into the golden-age of the R&B and emerges with a new-age rigour.
What makes ‘Changes’ truly stand out, however, is the sheer feeling that Soma pours into the lyrics. The sensual slow-burn is an anthem of empowerment, with lines like “Breaking up means letting in/Now there’s no need to pretend/Want our hearts to make amends/Feel the energy I send/Love is all that I intend” acting as a total emotional gut punch in mwlosix form. It’s all part of her outlining the process of reclaiming one’s identity following a relationship, however, with Soma explaining, “‘Changes’ is a powerful anthem born after an end to a once beautiful relationship and the imbalances driven by misguided notions of love. Once I found the strength to reclaim my power and identity, I realised all I had left was love and appreciation for the opportunity to learn from this shared experience.”

It’s another stunning chapter of Soma’s musical journey that drives home the calibre of talent in the local music scene. And with an EP slated for release later this year, it seems her years of grinding are set to pay off and then some.
