Sister duo Jenaya Okpalanze & Anisha Okpalanze AKA Surely Shirley provide the theme song to your next island holiday.

You’ve heard of the Island Boys, right? If not, save yourself the trouble. Just dive into the shimmering warm water that is the debut track from Surely Shirley. ‘Honeymoon Island’ is part tropical doo-wop, part 60s ballad, with the South Coast sisters clearly taking influence from old-time classics – tunes that their grandparents introduced them to – and adding their own coastal flavour.

The visuals which were directed by Tas Wilson along with Jenaya and Anisha, feel like a Wes Anderson home holiday movie. Underneath the surface of the warm colours and deliberately stilted performances, there’s a simmering darkness; something is slightly off behind the scenes of Honeymoon Island…

“Honeymoon Island portrays that bittersweet stage in a relationship labeled as ‘the honeymoon phase’ a place where everything is sugar-coated and sweet for the most part. For some this gradually fades into true tones of reality as time goes on. Honeymoon Island was recorded at our home in the winter of 2021, we handed the song to Nathan Hawes aka Kesmar who then created the instrumental,” the duo says.

“Once recorded we began to add in vocals and experiment with layers of backing vocals, harmonies and percussion and continued to do so till it felt full. A spark was ignited once Honeymoon Island was complete, resulting in a wave of new found confidence and inspiration in our song writing.”
