After 27 years of inspiring teenage rebellions and midlife crisis’ across the world, Canadian band Sum 41 has announced that they’re calling it quits. Fans are mourning the end of an era, but some have taken to social media to speculate on the real reason for the band’s disbandment. Could it be that the band members have simply run out of hair dye or black eyeliner?
All joking aside, Sum 41’s influence on the pop-punk scene cannot be denied. From their early days as Kaspir to their breakout album, All Killer No Filler, the band has consistently delivered catchy, high-energy tunes that have been responsible for some of the most deadly mosh pits in recent memory. And we can’t not mention their iconic music videos, featuring everything from skateboarding to zombies to a parody of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’ Of course, their breakout hit ‘In Too Deep’ and the accompanying clip is by far the band’s most iconic release, the 2001 single the pinnacle of 2000s fashion, angst and public pools (seriously, just look at how clear that water is!).

Speaking on their impending breakup, the band wrote online “Being in Sum 41 since 1996 brought us some of the best moments of our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans both old and new, who have supported us in every way. It is hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear this from us first. Sum 41 will be disbanding.”
As the band prepares to embark on their final tour, fans can take comfort in the fact that they’ll have one last chance to see Sum 41 live and relive the glory days of early 2000s pop-punk. And who knows, maybe someday in the future, the band will reunite for a comeback tour – complete with spiky hair and studded belts. For now, check out the full statement announcing their breakup below. Skumf*ks forever!
