In an age where Hollywood seems literally incapable of producing a film that isn’t a sequel or reboot, there’s one classic that has remained untouched. Back to the Future, the 1980s hit that’s remained universally adored since its release, has been the subject of various talks in recent years to be revamped for a modern audience. Although one of the franchise’s stars, Christopher Lloyd (who portrayed Dr. Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown) has expressed interest in the idea, series lead Michael J. Fox has remained quiet on it for some years, until now.
Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, Fox (who excellently portrayed Marty McFly), confessed he isn’t fanatical about the whole thing, indifferently stating, “Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already.” However, it seems that he, like the OG fans of the saga, he doesn’t see the need to reboot the already perfect film, adding, “I don’t think it needs to be rebooted. I think Bob [Zemeckis) and Bob [Gale] have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”
However, Spiderman himself, Tom Holland, has been at the centre of discussions about a potential remake in recent years, most notably after a viral deepfake that featured him and Robert Downey Jr. in one of the scenes from the 1985 film. It was so convincing that it reportedly led to Holland and RDJ meeting with Hollywood execs to get the ball rolling, however, it seems it never came to pass. Speaking on the ordeal in a recent interview, Holland acknowledged the immense challenge of remaking a film as iconic and highly regarded as Back to the Future. With a touch of self-awareness, he also expressed his admiration for the original, stating, “That film is the most perfect film or one of the most perfect films, one that could never be made better” (no arguments here).
While fans await any further developments regarding a Back to the Future remake, it remains to be seen if the beloved franchise will undergo a contemporary transformation. In the meantime, the banter between Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Tom Holland, and Robert Downey Jr. keeps the excitement alive.
