If Thor swapped his hammer for an AK-47…

Just three years after Netflix’s action hit Extraction helped us get a semblance of action while stuck in lockdown, the streamer has today released the second trailer for the upcoming sequel. Starring Chris Hemsworth in the leading role, the second trailer sees a very much alive Tyler Rake given yet another impossible mission: to rescue the family of a fearsome Georgian gangster from a prison. Because, you know, saving families from heavily guarded facilities is what Rake does in his free time (recycling plot lines never gets old).

And in what’s a huge relief to any fan of the 2020 entry in the saga, director Sam Hargrave and Marvel juggernauts the Russo brothers are back, along with Golshifteh Farahani who reprises her role as mercenary Nik Khan.

Given that the first film was so explosive in its use of action sequences and set pieces (perks of having a stunt coordinator as a director), you’d expect it to be rather hard for the filmmakers to up the ante for the second instalment. However, it seems that the infamous single take fight scene is set to be outdone and then some, with Hemsworth being shown to be set on fire at multiple times throughout the trailer. It turns out t was all real as well, with director Hargrave stating, “Hats off to Chris. It wasn’t CG fire. And he had to do it over and over. I don’t know a lot of people, let alone Hollywood A-listers, who are gonna let you light them on fire while on camera.”

Not to mention, there are so many stunts performed from tall as hell buildings and helicopters that I copped a solid dose of vertigo upon first viewing of the trailer. But I guess falling to one’s death is child play to being burnt alive when you get to the big leagues of the action genre.

Dare we say it looks like Extraction 2 (out June 16th) might just live up to the enormous expectations placed on it as a result of the first film. Check out the full trailer below.
