Anyone else getting Paddington vibes from this?

Despite two films having already been made about the Roald Dahl classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hollywood seems hellbent on rebooting it to kingdom come, and so, we’ve gotten yet another iteration of the beloved chocolate maker, with the first trailer coming out this morning.

Starring Hollywood heartthrob Timothée Chalamet in the leading role, the first Wonka trailer delves into the confectionary wiz’s backstory and his journey to buying his first chocolate shop. It’s a solid premise, but upon first viewing we can’t help but be distracted by the film’s eery resemblance to the Paddington films, which isn’t totally surprising considering Wonka director Paul King helmed the beloved children’s films. Still, from set pieces to costumes and even some of the cast (hello Hugh Grant), there definitely is an abundance of stylistic similarities between King’s two projects.

But aside from all of our gripes with the film’s recycled elements, it does seem that Chalamet is well and truly up to the challenge of playing Willy Wonka, serving up a portrayal that you could totally believe is a younger version of Gene Wilder’s version of the chocolatier from 1971. It’s most notably apparent in his delivery of the iconic “Scratch that. Reverse it”, along with his overall clumsy demeanour and approach to the role. Add the fact that the OG clumsy funnyman, Rowan Atkinson, appears in the trailer along with Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman and Hugh Grant as a CGI Oompa Loompa (can guarantee I’ll be having nightmares about that end scene tonight), and he’s in fine company in what’s one of the strongest casts of the year.

It’s a solid premise for the film and you best believe I’m going to go see it regardless of how mid the trailer is, but my hopes aren’t super high after first viewing. Check out the full first look at Wonka below.
