The multi-ARIA winning phenom keeps going from strength to strength…

Genesis Owusu, one of the nation’s biggest international exports in recent years, might just have cemented himself as the most entertaining artists in the country, releasing the mind-bending visuals for his latest single, ‘Tied Up’.

Beginning with Genny Wu in a wrestling ring of all places, the visuals quickly take on a life o their own as they embrace the animated and surreal as they revolve around the star before transitioning to a cityscape, centred on Genesis as he walks the streets while adorned in boxing gear. Featuring parkour, explosions and a moody colour grade that has a crisp noir edge to it, the visuals as a whole strike this potent mix between Spiderman: Across The Spiderverse and Bladerunner, which is by far the coolest two influences you could have a for a music video.

The visuals are obviously on another level in the new release, but thankfully, the sonics are on equal footing, featuring a mixture of the singing/rapping concoction that Genesis has perfected over the years as he raps about dancing his way through demons and making it through in an uneasy world. It not only works as a display of Genesis’ artistic mindset in 2023, but acts as an embodiment of his upcoming sophomore album, Struggler, which is slated to land on August 18th.

Characterised as an “imminent exploration of the chaos and absurdity of life, and our ability to endure”, the new LP is a continuation of the mental health chronicle that was the Canberra-based artist’s debut album, Smiling With No Teeth, and explores how to get through such trial and tribulations, all the while coming out the other side. And just going off the two years the ‘Wit Da Team’ singer has had recently, we’re guessing he’s well and truly conquered his demons.

Genesis Owusu’s new single ‘Tied Up’ is out now. Be sure to buy/stream it here and check out the full list of dates for his upcoming Aussie tour (which features special guest, Earthgang) below.
