UK producer Tourist made his long-awaited return to Sydney last night to a packed out Metro Theatre, bringing in tow his 2022 album Inside Out along with his esteemed live show. Supported by homegrown producer Juno Mamba, the acclaimed maestro took to the stage with equal measures of bravado and stage presence, as the moody lighting and production helped him ease the crowd into a straight hour-and-a-half of mindwarping. Highlights included his Flume collab ‘Sirens’ ft. Caroline Polachek, ‘We Stayed Up All Night’ and of course, ‘Howl’.
An especially notable inclusion was the UK producer’s latest single, ‘A Little Bit Further’. Sampled from Mark Fry’s iconic ‘Song For Wilde’, the new track listens like a sonic symphony in matters of euphoria and genre, beginning with hurtling vocal inflections and guitar strums. Then, a series of glitchy synths and breathy female vocals make their way into the fray, helping to find a midway between an indie-rock feel good and a melancholic, but hopeful, dance gem.
In accordance with Tourist’s other works, ‘A Little Bit Further’ is unmistakably hopeful. It’s especially notable near the end of the record, with Mark Fry’s iconic vocals singing through as the layers remove themselves one by one from the soundscape.
In accordance with the ethereal video released alongside it, Tourists live visuals amplify the all the feels of ‘A Little Bit Further’ with just the right amount of precision and grace, in what was a night of total transcendence.
