If the rest of their sophomore album sounds like this, we don’t stand a chance…

The rise of homegrown rockers, the Terrys, seems to be bordering on meteoric at this point. with the Geringong outfit managing to race toward becoming one of the most in-demand artists in the nation over this past year. It’s subsequently taken them across the high seas, with the band halfway through a NZ tour before descending upon Europe in late September and early October. It’s all systems go for the five piece, which makes their latest single ‘Silent Disco’ all the more enjoyable.

Immediately jumpstarted by roaring guitars, clattering drums and an arsenal of effects that transport you to the glory of Brit-pop, the Terry’s let you know from the get-go this is one for the headbangers out there. Frontman Jacob Finch enters with equal measures of attitude and sleepiness, singing a bunch of nonsensical lyrics born from spontaneous creativity. It consequently adds this super fluid and carefree nature to the track that The Terrys take full advantage of, particularly on the hook “Wait and see/What it really needs to be” as they kick things into overdrive both melodically and rhythmically.

A highlight is easily the second verse however where they manage to squeeze in some emotional content as Finch resminices on the best day of his life, referencing silent romances and football games in what’s a unapologetically South Coast offering that captures the slow day-to-day of Gerringong and all that existing in such a place entails. Despite this inference, however, Finch stresses that, “‘Silent Disco’ is not a serious song, and the lyrics were made up in the studio” while adding “It was never written down anywhere ever; it was just flown straight from the top of the dome!”

It’s a fiery offering from the coastal five piece, and it seems we’re in store for plenty more when their sophomore album is finally out. Be sure to keep an eye out for more details on the record, and check out ‘Silent Disco’ above. You can also buy/stream it here.
