Miley Cyrus was by far one of the biggest artists in the world when she embarked on her sold out Bangerz tour a decade ago, the former Disney alum having found global success for her boundary pushing vintage of pop and her larger than life live show. Unsurprisingly, the tour received rave reviews and generated millions upon millions, with many praising how utterly crazy the production was while helping to amplify the music of the 2013 album that inspired it. Now, however, Cyrus is opening up on just what went on behind the scenes, and why, specifically, she didn’t make a cent off her Bangerz domination despite it grossing $63 million USD ($116 million AUD when adjusted for inflation).
Taking to TikTok for the latest instalment of her Used To Be Young series, Cyrus divulged just how she ended up being able to afford all the glitz and glam of the global run of gigs (oversized puppets, giant beds and even a stage entrance made in the shape of her face), stating that she had to reach into her own pocket for it all.
“I didn’t make a dime on this tour because I wanted the tour to be excellent. And when everyone kept saying: ‘Why are you doing this? You’re not going to make any money?’ I said: ‘There’s no one I would rather invest in than myself,'” she explained.
“The Bangerz Tour was an investment in myself,” she added. “A lot of the ideas were kind of so outlandish that no one really wanted to support me in making these pieces. I had big puppets, oversized beds, I came out of my own face, on my tongue.I wanted to end it with a Truman Show reference. So I flew out on a giant hotdog, obviously, and I left through all the clouds and the exit sign like Jim Carrey does. Because I felt like The Truman Show was really a reflection of my life.” Been there.
Despite her seemingly positive outlook on the move, Cyrus has sworn off touring altogether, recently announcing that she would not be hitting the road for her latest LP, Endless Summer Vacation. Citing the harsh realities of tour life, Cyrus made it clear we wouldn’t see her back on stage any time soon.

I’m guessing if the tour made another $60 milly however, she could be tempted (that is if she could keep all of it). Check out some highlights from the Bangerz tour for a sweet trip down memory lane, along with Cyrus’ explaining the finances behind it below.
