Aussies love a ‘Scrapper’!

This September, audiences will meet the most unlikely father-daughter duo of 2023 in‘ Scrapper’. The dramedy tells the coming-of-age story of the twelve-year-old Georgie (Lola Campbell) living alone amid East London’s council estates. After her mum’s passing, Georgie navigates the adult world draped in an oversized football jersey with her charmingly goofy best friend, Ali. However, with the grace of a garbage bag hitting the pavement, her world is turned upside down with the arrival of her estranged father, Jason (Harris Dickinson). What unravels is a touching tale of what it means to be family and how growing up can go both ways. You’ll laugh, cry, and hear enough “innit’s” and “wicked’s” to last you the rest of the year.

Director & writer Charlotte Regan has made a career for herself exploring the rich identity of England’s working class. Cinema often paints the UK’s urban landscape with grey hues and unending social deprivation. Regan has always viewed this interpretation through cautiously squinted eyes and a deep scepticism. For her, growing up in Islington provided a kaleidoscopic perspective of life. Each aspect of her surroundings left an indelible mark on her creative identity, whether it be the sprawling brick houses, humorously esoteric use of language, or the local rappers she pleaded to let her film their music videos. Having created over a dozen short films and works for Mumford & Sons, Stereophonics, and The Guardian, Regan began to plot out her feature debut ‘Scrapper’, a culmination of over a decade of experiences, ideas, and inspirations. Having its premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and winning the  Grand Jury Prize for the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, movie lovers have been buzzing about the arrival of a feel good classic.
