Following a massive year of touring Europe and America, releasing number one hits with Nelly Furtado and MK and seemingly taking the world by storm, Australia’s favourite son has today reaffirmed that he’s one of our most cherished exports. Or rather, the ARIAs have, with the Aussie award staple today announcing the nominations for this year’s awards, which Dom has absolutely cleaned up.
Raking in a total of six nods for this year’s proceedings including ‘Best Solo Artist’, ‘Best Dance/Electronic Release’, ‘Best Australian Live Act’ and more, the ‘Take It’ producer’s tear of the awards is virtually unheard of, with the festival staple breaking new ground for Aussie dance music in the music industry. It’s a fact not lost on the veteran producer, with Dom explaining in our chat via Zoom yesterday that it makes him “Excited about the future of dance music in Australia.”
Further reflecting on his disbelief at this year’s nominations, Dom adds, “I’m pinching myself. Six nominations is obscene. I’ve seen artists sweep through with nominations like this before, people like Genesis Owusu, Rüfüs Du Sol and so on. It’s always so incredible and I’m so proud of those guys, but I never thought I’d be in a similar boat, so I’m stoked. Thank you so much to everyone who voted and thanks for hanging in there.
“It really feels like I’m flying the Aussie flag over here in the States and Europe. When I’m at shows, so many people always rock up with flags or signs referring to old sets of mine at Revs [Revolver Upstairs in Melbourne]. It’s crazy.”
It’s undoubtedly an exciting time for the Melbourne producer to say the least, and luckily, he’ll be coming back to celebrate this Summer with a run of Aussie shows, playing two Sidney Myer Music Bowls while making appearances at Spilt Milk, Lost Paradise and more. Be sure to catch him this summer (tickets here) and check out his full list of ARIA nominations for 2023 below.
