Sitting somewhere between the Beach Boys and Unknown Mortal Orchestra, new single ‘Falling Again’ wanders into an offbeat psych territory that’s completely addictive and a little bit weird (in the best kind of way).
Guitars, just the right amount of discordant; drums that punch you in the gut with a left hook that’s a little lopsided, ‘Falling Again’ delivers a refreshingly minimal slice of psych rock that feels inherently raucous, even if it’s just below the surface.
“They called me the life of the party but that was years ago, “ the song begins. “And I tried to keep all of my sorrow deep and underfoot.” For a song that wrestles with the reality of life’s distinct lack of rose beds, it makes the whole endeavour sound pretty damn good, all the same.
‘Falling Again’ follows on from Winterfield’s 2020 record, The Sundog (the debut album under his solo moniker), which saw him break away from the groove-laden sound of Jagwar Ma, and explore more laidback, melancholy territories, weaving together surf rock, blues and indie pop.
The new single is the first taste of a brand new album, Surf The Coffin (Bury Me With My Gat), which is due out next month. Recorded at Winterfield’s Hollywood house over the summer, the album is inspired by the playful sounds of 60s Californian rock. Winterfield performed everything on the album, which was mixed by Dylan Herman, known for his work with Beck.
Surf The Coffin (Bury Me With My Gat) is out October 20 through AWAL/The Orchard (to pre-save head here).
