Anyone else feeling a bit wavy right now?

Keeping the steeze train going into the tail end of October is Melbourne upstart, Squid The Kid, who today returns with his new single ‘Late Night Antics’. A slow burn that leans into his funk and soul inclinations, the new offering from the Vans final alum is a blissful journey through his decades-spanning influences, however tinged with a mid-song twist.

The song kicks off with a wavy vibe vibe that sets a calm and cozy atmosphere, skeletal instrumentation complemented by the Melbourne upstart’s soulful vocals. The following verse is quintessential Squid, a mix of down-tempo rapping and singing that is eerily reminiscent of Anderson .Paak, as he reflects on a late night and his escapades into the early hours.

The song, however, swiftly transitions into a lively party anthem filled with bubbly and smooth grooves, treating us to a mid track twist that fully immerses itself in the dangerous and rowdy parts of the night and early morning. The accompanying sonics mirror this transition, with the guitars, drums and synths quickening in turn, resulting in a dance-ready gem. The inclusion of accompanying female vocals add a sense of tenderness to the record, a sentiment most noticeable in the line “Tell me how you’re feeing tonight”.

Speaking on the song’s unconventional narrative and sonic structure, Squid explains, ‘In the first part, the main theme is a nice and quiet night, whilst waking up due to not being able to sleep, trying to end certain cravings normally found at this time of day. Then enters the surprise, a transition leading into a totally different world and section. In the second part, it’s a bit more up beat and dancy, this represents the other end of the spectrum, going out partying, hanging out with friends on the weekend.’

It’s another stellar offering from the Melbourne upstart, and no doubt there’s plenty more on the way. Be sure to check out ‘Late Night Antics’ in full above and buy/stream it here.
