You know Mac The Knife. The post-punk quartet from Sydney have been serving up chunky riffs, brooding energy and heavy breakdowns across the country for the past eight years, luring in audiences who don’t mind washing down some cutting lyricism with a sweaty mosh pit.
Today’s release ‘Golden’ is a little different from the Mac we’ve heard on their In The Shadow Of It All EP, with the band leaning more into the sounds of Dinosaur Jr and (maybe) Sonic Youth and treading that melancholic-optimistic line. The tone of the track is perfectly suited to the lyrics with frontman Bryn Chapman-Parish documenting that feeling of coming out of a hole of darkness with a sense of hopefulness.
“I’ve struggled with depression for a large period of my life, in all its ugly forms and faces,” Bryn says. “It’s a constant in my journey, so I’ve slowly learnt to accept it with open arms, and try to find ways of living alongside it and tending to it as I would a close friend who is struggling. That feeling of relief when you wake up in the morning one day, and the work you’ve been diving into inside yourself has finally started to take effect, that’s ‘Golden’.”
Don’t worry, there’s still a heavy breakdown before a delightful outro, symbolising the path out of darkness (or at least that’s how we’re interpreting it) that we can only imagine will be going down a treat live.
