You may know Inner-West artist Hayley Lyon AKA Lady Lyon as a country-tinged crooner or a heartstrung songstress, but you probably didn’t know her as a bloodthirsty horror fan, the kind of person who would put her bandmates in danger just for kicks… well, let us introduce you to the darker side of Lady Lyon…
‘I Believe In Love’ is more of what we love about LL. The track is full of Americana-style melodies and lyrics that hit you right in the feels, set to a tempo that is perfect for a dance floor boogie. Lyon’s vocals are pure power while at the same time sounding like they’ve been dripped in honey – you could listen to her sing out the phone book without ever getting sick of those pipes.
Underneath this sonic delight, however, is a healthy dose of irony. The song isn’t about being loved-up and happy, it’s more about being a little down-and-out but optimistic.
“This is one of my favourites off the album. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was a love song, and I suppose it kind of is, but it’s more about not being in love right now, and knowing that there’s… someone out there,” Hayley says. “It’s got this saccharine-sweet pop chorus that’s impossible to shake from your mind, with these dark, moody verses and a Chris Isaac-y outro that mesh so inexplicably well (I reckon, anyway). I wanted to try and capture that in the clip; pairing this kind of classic, dark, cabin-in-the-woods horror setting with a bit of a lighthearted, verging on humorous tone.”
Directed by Reece Grogan of Yeah Rad, the video is bloody epic. Tonally, you can feel it building from the first shot, with whoever picked the location nailing the brief for a paranoid, isolated piece of horror. Guitar slinger Ross Tipper plays the spooked-out main character who you find yourself yelling out to – RUN ROSS RUN!
“We booked a little cabin for the night, drove out, waited ’til dark and shot it in a night. No crew, no complicated setups, just a shot list full of creepy tropes and one Ross Tipper to boss around for the evening. You did great, sweetie,” Hayley says.
