Normally by 14, you start to develop you musical identity, breaking away from whatever your parents have had on rotation and following your own tastes. For Maple Johns AKA Maple’s Pet Dinosaur, it seems like she’s been on her own path for a while – so much so that she’s developed a sound in her own music that is wayyyy beyond her years.
‘lego’ is built around some a swaggering groove and some heavy guitars that could easily have been plucked right from the a alternative “hits” compilation CD of the 90s (those were the days). Over this Maple delivers plucky verses at a near-rap speed, before the anthemic chorus hits you like a sledgehammer.
“Musically, lego is inspired by Faith No More, Beastie Boys, L7 and a bunch of ‘90s stuff- but this isn’t a throwback,” she says. “I want to tell real stories about being a teenager today, especially a teenage girl.”
Lyrically, the track is a call to arms – Maple’s way of saying back the fuck off and let me do my thing. It’s a message that people of all ages really need to be hearing, and one that feels authentic to her life as a 14-year-old.
“lego is a bully diss track. It’s for anyone who’s ever felt targeted and wants to fight back. A lot of songs about this topic are ‘in your feelings’ type ballads but I wanted to deliver a bully-beat down, a heavy ‘f*** you’ to anyone out there who tries to kill another person’s vibe and confidence. Writing this song gave me the strength to set boundaries and find my own people. Now I want to build that community further through this music,” says Maple.
