With her Cobra mixtape still living rent free in our heads, Sydney’s SOMA has today returned with ‘Eye Of Ra’ – her fourth new release in 12 or so months. Artists talk about moments when they’re in a flow state and every time they put pen to paper something gold comes out, and it feels like we’re witnessing that from SOMA.
The track is built on dark synths and a beat that hits hard enough for the club, but also carries a chillwave energy. It’s the perfect backdrop for her vocals to shine as she delivers line after line with grace and power.
“‘Eye Of Ra’ came together late one night in my Marrickville home studio, produced by the brilliant prodbypurc. I recorded it at Metronome Studios with Nick Hills, whose attention to detail made the sessions effortless, and it was mixed and mastered by Daniel Roberts (MixedByDaniel), who gave the track a rich, immersive sound. I wrote ‘Eye Of Ra’ when I was feeling a disconnect, from the industry, from myself, and from the state of the world. It wasn’t planned. It was something I needed to get out,” she says of the track.
Lyrically, she delves into centuries past and past lives to conjure lines with Wu-Tang-style imagery of other worlds, while still maintaining a futuristic vibe.
“I’ve always been drawn to Egyptian mythology, ‘The Eye of Ra’ represents a divine force that is both protective and destructive, the sun’s power to illuminate truth, even when it burns,” she sats. “That symbolism mirrors where I was mentally: forced to see myself clearly, to acknowledge pain, doubt, and anger, and to recognise that awareness itself is a form of power.”
Soak this one up below and go follow SOMA here for the next chapter of what we’re sure is going to be another huge year for her!
