What do two legends chat about? We dropped in on a Ladyhawke and Bec Sandridge convo.

Ok, so we’re a little late to the party, but we’re now fully locked into Ladyhawke’s remix of Bec Sandridge’s ‘At Last’. And let us say – we’re making up for lost time, giving this tune the rinse-and-repeat treatment it deserves. The NZ indie icon has taken Sandridge’s track and reworked it from an uplifting pop gem into a club-ready heater…

The remix harnesses the power of Sandridge’s vocals, pushing them further and flipping the beat from a near-country kick into a funkified, bass-forward groove that – for anyone who’s seen Ladyhawke over the years – will feel delightfully familiar.

But what do these two shoot the shit about when they aren’t cooking up sizzlers? Turns out: vintage music gear and things that make you go “at last”… Check out their interview with each other below:

BS: Hi, what are you doing today Pip?

LH: Well, I’m currently working on finishing some music that is urgently stacking up but instead of doing that I have found myself infront of the tv playing fortnite on the playstation. Eating chocolate, and googling vintage gaming consoles.

BS: What’s your most prized tech gear in your studio?

LH: This is a tough question!! Because I prize gear in the music world AND in the gaming world. I think music gear wise, this is a hard one to sum up because some has nostalgia attached to it and some has “cool gear to own” attached to it.

I’m going to say my 1989 Gibson Explorer. It was the first ever guitar I saved up for and used exclusively in my first band Two Lane Blacktop. It’s still in amazing shape and I’m considering taking it back out on the road with Ladyhawke. In the world of gaming – I have too much to count but one I’m proud of is an original boxed NES with zapper gun and duck hunt. Mint condition.

BS: 3 things that make you go “ah, at laaaaast”

LH:
1. Getting through customs at any international airport.
2. Finishing an album.
3. This only happened once – but that final push when the baby comes out and I said “At last, I finally get to meet you”.

B: Favourite road song?

LH: Road songs are a whole genre on their own. They can live outside the parameters of your music taste and sit purely in the world of driving long distance in your car. And for this reason I choose Harry Nilsson – Everybody’s Talkin’

LH: Hi Beccy-Boo. What is something nice you’ve done today?

BS: Hello Pippy Poo. I had a nice sleep in and iced coffee, sent your remix to a couple of friends (ahead of its release tomorrow!!), so all is looking up for me today…

LH: What is your favourite David Byrne song and why?

BS: ‘This Must Be The Place’, without fail. It’s the greatest love song of all time (close competitor is ‘Everywhere’ – Fleetwood Mac). I also dig his record w Annie Clark (St Vinno).

LH: I know you love food, tell me some places you would recommend me to try out in Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland.

BS:
Syd: Cafe Paci (best pasta) + Brighter coffee (best coffee).
Melb: The Sporting Club (best schnit) + Sth of Johnson (best porridge)
Suck: Oohfa (best pizza and tap wine) + Mt Atkinson coffee (good/great vibe/coffee/bagels).

LH: For my third and final question. If there was one piece of tech or gear you could instantly acquire at zero cost right now – what would it be? Sidenote – it does not have to be music related.

BS: I think it’s your fourth, but I’ll give you this one for free. I really need some new socks, but aside of that new gear wise: I’d love the LOSSY pedal old gear: I’ve always wanted a piano. Any would do…
