With one of the meanest deliveries ever heard on the microphone, Ice Cube has long established himself as a pioneer of Gangster Rap. Now, his role in one of the genre’s most pivotal groups – N.W.A – has been immortalised on the big screen.

Straight Outta Compton premiered earlier this week in Australia, having dominated the box office internationally alongside widespread critical acclaim. It’s the rousing tale of five Los Angeles youths who skyrocketed to international fame with their visceral brand of storytelling – becoming one of music’s most polarising groups in the process.

Yes, we saw the film, and let’s just say that it’s essential viewing for any rap fan – especially the scene featuring Ice Cube and a baseball bat. Cube already has cult classics like Boyz N The Hood and Friday under his belt, and Straight Outta Compton is bound to achieve similar legendary status.

Ice Cube and his ridiculously similar-looking son O’Shea Jackson Jr – who plays his father in the film – are both here in Australia, and we were lucky enough to take a few shots of the two at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Despite the Gangster Rap bravado, they’re some of the nicest and most down-to-earth dudes ever.
