Backed by an innovative sense of style and a no-holds-barred attitude, she is a rare breed. She spits bars in an aggressive, almost hurried manner, but her lyrics stay with us long after the music has stopped. Taking control of her image and how she’s portrayed as an artist, her style and sense of self is palpable in everything that she does; from her explicit lyrics to the way she dresses. Tommy Genesis is the newest signee of Awful Records, rubbing shoulders with great company like Father, Abra and KCSB. Not one to be outdone, she’s released a single, music video and album all in the same month. We’re all about her, so we’re going to tell you why you should be, too.
1. The Execute music video
Draped in oversized sweats, torn-up jeans and schoolgirl skirts, the aesthetic of this clip is utterly tantalising. It’s hard not to fall in love with her breezy dancing, mouthy lyrics and intimate stare. Brb going to dig out my old high school uniform.
2. Her digital brand is real
With the total integration of social media into our everyday lives, it’s common for artists and celebrities to forge a fake internet persona. Seeming all too idealistic, their lives are so attractive in their photoshopped, soft-focus glow. Tommy Genesis is no such sham. Posting screenshots of potential lyrics, photos of her giving the finger and real AF selfies, you know she’s got nothing to hide.
3. Her style is original
Androgynous one day and promiscuous the next, Tommy Genesis doesn’t box herself into a pre-conceived image. In her eyes, it’s okay to be dress street or dress sexy. She projects her chameleonic personality through what she wears, and every day she’s got something different going on. Mixing designer brands with thrift shop finds, she dresses how she feels, and that’s how it should be.
4. Her lyrics are vicious
Not adhering to the common brand of female bedroom rap, Tommy Genesis’ lyrics expand over a multitude of issues. She doesn’t mind sounding aggressive, and this distinction is what breaks down the barriers between her and her male counterparts. Dripping with sass, the intro to Execute is all you need to know you want to hear more. “Crucifixion on my back/Your bitch fixated on my past/She un-equated to my pack/I’m running wolves/God we made it/Subjugated like syntax.”
5. Her work ethic is rare
Releasing a single, music video and album all in the same month is no easy feat. Her latest album, World Vision, has been amazingly received, and she’s not done yet. She’s been dropping hints of another solo release, plus some collabs with friends, all before the year is out. Let’s cross our fingers for a tour, because we need to see this ferocious, fine female in full effect.
