Since its release last summer, Vince Staples’ 2015 debut studio album Summertime ’06 has been in heavy rotation. The double album is a masterpiece of sorts, with lyricism that paints Staples’ life on the streets in vivid detail and reflects on the heavy issues in current American society, all over dark, crepuscular instrumentals.

All this is to say that any new material from Staples is eagerly anticipated. Blessedly, The Fader’s cover story on the young emcee promises just that. What’s more, staff writer Jeff Weiss deems the new six song EP, titled Prima Donna as a “chaotic fusion of warped soul, distorted hooks, and extraterrestrial demonic spirituals.” And additionally, he crowns it as Staples’ “greatest artistic leap forward… a hyper-musical fusillade of sounds that could be described as psychedelic gangsta rap blues that you could play at 2 a.m. at an underground rave.” Buckle your seatbelts, folks.

The EP is slated to arrive sometime this [Northern American] summer, and feature production from the English musician James Blake as well as producer DJ Dahi, whom you may remember from this phenomenal beat, among others.

The promise of new music definitely adds gravitas to Staples’ upcoming Australian tour, which will take place alongside electronic dance music heavyweight Flume in November and December. Check out all the details here, as well as LifeWithoutAndy’s recent TwentyFour feature covering the last time Vince paid us a visit.
