We might all know Gotye for his inescapable 2012 hit ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ (watch this video for an accurate description of what happens IRL when this song drops), but it seems that the local musician turned global star has some tricks up his sleeve.

It’s no secret that Australian politics has turned into an absolute shit-fight as of late, but Gotye is looking to inject some much-needed blue-collar spirit into the arena. Along with his bandmates in The Basics, he is forming a political party called the Basics Rock’n’Roll Party (BRRP), which hopes to run in the upcoming Victorian state election come November. Bandmate Kris Schroeder commented:

“Politics in this country is treated like it belongs to the elite… We’ve all got higher education degrees so we’re not just musicians, but we haven’t come up through any political ideology. We just care about certain things like indigenous affairs and education.”

According to The Age:

“The three pillars of the party’s political movement are innovation, education and Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

In order to be in the running this November, the BRRP needs 500 registered members with the Victorian Electoral Commission. They have already taken to social media to spread the good word and gain supporters. Should they be successful in Victoria, the BRRP also have plans on a Federal scale.

Could Gotye & The Basics be the next Peter Garrett & Midnight Oil?

SOUNDS GOOD TO US. FUCK TONY ABBOTT. ETC, ETC.
