White Girl is the latest indie film to stir controversy at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, which recalls the 1995 cult classic Kids with its voyeuristic camera direction and unbearably realistic depiction of sex and a seedy drug-fuelled New York underworld.
Inspired by the real life experiences of writer-director Elizabeth Wood, the film tells the story of a college freshman, Leah, who hooks up with a Peurto Rican drug dealer, and is forced to sell his hefty stash of cocaine in order to pay for his release when he is arrested on drug charges. Starring 21-year-old actress Morgan Saylor (Homeland), who gives a gutsy and impressive performance as the sexy, rebellious and out-of-control Leah, whose platinum-dyed hair and white girl privilege fail to contain her in her lust for danger and crazy experiences.
Those documented in the film include partaking in cocaine and oral sex with her boss as at a magazine internship, and collapsing from exhaustion amid a bathroom threesome. With its ultra-realistic performances and an exhilarating storyline, White Girl is definitely worth checking out for all the film buffs out there. Receiving rave reviews from film critics White Girl is available now via streaming on Netflix. See the trailer below for a taste:
