Beginning at Belmore Park and taking a march up Oxford Street, the rally culminated at Taylor’s Square where organiser Tyson Koh was joined onstage by Hayley Mary of The Jezabels, Urthboy, One Day, Paul Mac and more. As ‘Shooting Stars’ by Bag Raiders blasted over the speakers and sent the crowd into elation, you have to wonder if dancefloor classics like this are going to emerge from Sydney in the future: Musicians, DJs and producers now have fewer places to play, congregate and network. Our local-gone-international stars who earned their stripes on Sydney’s nightlife circuit include Flume, Alison Wonderland, Flight Facilities and Anna Lunoe – where are the next generation going to fine tune their skills?
While Keep Sydney Open has tapped into issues surrounding youth culture, the turn out proves that this is an issue affecting all generations: Kids, teenagers, adults and parents are all present and united under the cause, while Jimmy Barnes threw his support behind the movement earlier this week, noting that his career was forged in Sydney – with live music dropping dramatically since the lockout laws were introduced. Sydneysiders want their city back.
