Supporting act Client Liason kicked things off with big hair and even bigger energy. An empty dance floor ignited into a hefty crowd bopping to bass infused synth-pop like it was 1989. Frontman Monte Morgan even had to dodge a few knickers amongst his charismatic, quirked-up, dance moves and emblematic vocals.
Lift off from Flight Facilities came shortly after Client Liason’s magnetic performance. Passengers were told to buckle-in as a tripped out ‘captains address’ transitioned into their fresh track ‘Two Bodies’ to get things flying. Vocalist Owl Eyes was immediately introduced and charmed us into a frenzy with spritely moves and enchanting vocals.
It was during a riff-heavy, bass-driven rendition of ‘With You’ that FlightFacilities really reached altitude. An inescapable groove captured the crowd and slick vocals from Kurt Kristen lifted us to the turbulent and feverish height we would cruise at for the rest of the night. The iconic ‘Stand Still’ then flowed in from Hugo and Jimmy which had everyone relishing in its iconic whistle-led melody and accompanying funked up bass line. Owl Eyes was back for a sick take on Major Lazor’s ‘Get Free’, on which the boys treated the crowd to their own flavour of the Aussie electro anthem. With another solid album track ‘Why Do You Feel’, featuring soulful rap and a tight bass line, the boys justified the fresh adoration to the masterful music featured on ‘Down to Earth’.
FF landed strongly with a double drop of crowd favourites ‘Crave You’ and ‘Claire De Lune’ both of which hurtled the floor into a euphoric sing-along and dance frenzy. They followed the hits with a high-flying medley of songs both on and off the album including synthy ‘Heart Attack’ and funk filled disco bopper ‘Foreign Language’.
The boys left the stage to an insatiable ruckus that brought them back for an encore just a minute later. Kristen and Owl Eyes joined them in rocketing off the Reggie Watts collab ‘Sunshine’ before peaking at a flavoursome, romping remix of John Paul Young’s ‘Love is in the Air’. Smiling ferociously, it was with this redefined classic FF left the stage having launched Metro Freo into an altitude seemingly nothing could bring them down from.
The duo’s stage presence, consisting of raw, genuine enjoyment and an unapologetic commitment to their music was infectious throughout. For Freo, this sincere devotion to their craft, and the people that enjoy it, meant we knew no matter what funk-infused, disco-powered, deep house magic was blasting out from the custom Flight Facilities stage, it was going to make us soar.
