Brisbane favourites Dune Rats got it started in the arvo, bringing their beer-soaked, rustic rock to Splendour’s grandest stage with blazing energy. A few months back, the band earned their first #1 album in The Kids Will Know It’s Bullshit – and it definitely showed with the sizeable turn out. Sing-a-long favourites like ‘Bullshit’ earned a huge response from the crowd of yahoos, with Dune Rats delivering one hour of power and unadulterated fun.
Having already displayed an upgraded live show on their recent Fracture headline tour, it seems that the sky’s the limit for Slumberjack – and a packed performance at the Mix Up Stage heralded another accolade for the Perth duo, with emotive electronica aplenty.
Later, Allday – one of the few rappers billed on Saturday’s roster – delivered irresistibly catchy singles like ‘Right Now’ and ‘You Always Know The DJ,’ while Asta also jumped onstage for their lively ‘Dynamite’ collaboration. Relying heavily on pop and electronica, Allday’s sound hits all the sonic sweet spots, and makes for a live show that thrills even in the more sombre notes of tracks like ‘Wolves.’
To close it all off, Two Door Cinema Club and Queens of the Stone Age presented audiences with a tough choice to make – although the most ambitious trekked from the Mix Up Stage to the Amphitheatre to witness both of the rock giants in acton. Two Door’s more boppy, electronic approach worked a treat on big anthems like ‘What You Know,’ while QOTSA delivered with Josh Homme’s effortless charisma.
