You might have seen the ‘808’ message written in the sky, walking down the ARIA’s red carpet and even on our website. So what’s all the fuss about? Here are some of our theories on the 808, shrouded in mystery:

808: THE AREA CODE?

808 is the area code for a group of Hawaiian Islands. With parties like Holy Ship! and Your Paradise taking electronic festivals on the ocean and into luxurious holiday locations, could we be getting a new voyage overseas? We’re ironing our Hawaiian shirts in anticipation.

808 DRUMS?

The 808 drum has been a staple in Southern rap & electronic music for a minute – so much so that there’s groups like 808 Mafia producing some of 2014’s biggest bangers. Could we be seeing a new Southern rap-themed takeover in Sydney?

808S & HEARTBREAK?

The title of Kanye’s polarising yet undeniably influential album, could the 808 number be a reference to the record? Is Kanye going to be making a return to Australia after his recent 2014 tour with Pusha T?

808: POLICE CODE

Apparently, 808 is the police code for disturbing the peace – is a full scale riot breaking out in Sydney? Is this the apocalypse? HALP.
