Akon is expanding his plans for his futuristic cities outside his native country of Senegal, and he’s just gotten approval from a government body. Now, the Ugandan has given the ‘Smack That’ singer permission to build an Akon City in the country, giving him one square mile of land to begin planning the new metropolis. Like the city he’s building in Senegal, the new Ugandan settlement will operate solely on his AKoin cryptocurrency.
The amenities included in the new city haven’t been released, but based on the Senegal blueprint, it can expect a Hamptons Hospital campus, Hamptons Mall, its own school, police department, and waste management service as well as parks, stadiums, and other recreational facilities. All of the above costed around $6 billion USD (around $8 billion AUD) to construct in Senegal, so no doubt it’ll clock up a similar price tag. Interestingly, a reporter actually tried to quiz Akon on the price in a press conference, but Akon dodged the question multiple times, obviously hesitant to make early promises.
The singer has also stressed that the average Ugandan will be able to afford the city, pointing to the development of cryptocurrency as a light of hope for the country of Uganda as a whole, adding “I know if I put it there, they’re going to find a way to afford it because it’s going to motivate them. But ultimately when you create an opportunity, people grow with that opportunity, people learn with that opportunity, people are motivated with that opportunity.”

Let’s hope he’s right. Construction on Uganda’s Akon City will reportedly be completed by 2036, while Akon City in Senegal is expected to be completed in three years. Check out the early renderings for what the new cities will look like below.
