Back To The Future co-stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd have reunited on stage at New York’s comic book convention. Taking part in a special panel devoted to the 1985 film, the actors appeared at this year’s comic-con to speak with fans, and shared an emotional greeting some 37 years since Back To The Future first premiered.
Fox and Lloyd — who respectively played a time-travelling teenager and kooky scientist in the sci-fi blockbuster — were met with rapturous applause as they were introduced to audiences at the panel, later reminiscing about stories on the set of Back To The Future. Throughout the conversation, the pair discussed Fox’s initial absence in the role of Marty McFly, with the character originally being portrayed by actor Eric Stoltz.

If you were a teenager in 1985, then Michael J. Fox was your guy. Marty McFly in Back to the Future is the coolest teenager in cinema history.

Lloyd noted that despite having filmed with Stoltz for six weeks prior to his firing, “there was immediate chemistry” between himself and Fox once he’d assumed the role. Elsewhere in the discussion, Fox spoke about his journey with Parkinson’s disease, which he’s suffered from since his diagnosis in 1991. The actor said the condition is “a gift”, before thanking Lloyd for his friendship throughout the health battle.

“People like Chris have been there a lot for me,” Fox said, “and so many of you have. It’s not about what I have, it’s about what I’ve been given—the voice to get this done, and help people out.” The reunion comes after rumours of a Back To The Future reboot were quashed in 2018. Robert Zemeckis, who directed all three films in the Future franchise, denied that a reprisal of the film was in the works, saying that a reboot wouldn’t happen “until both [co-writer] Bob [Gale] and I are dead.”
Thankfully, fans can get their fix of an elderly man taking a teenager on time-bending hijinks via Rick & Morty, which is based off Back To The Future and debuted its sixth season earlier this year.
