Dune, Billie Eilish and Chris Rock’s chin all recieved a gong…

Following a few years of lacklustre ratings, the Academy Awards returned today armed with some choice strategies to reignite audience interest, with decidedly mixed results. Most notably, the Oscars reinstated hosts for the first time since 2018, with comediennes Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall unleashing on fellow celebrities during a savage roasting of this year’s nominees.

Taking aim at everything from Best Film frontrunner Power of The Dog to Will Smith’s notoriously open marriage to Jada Pinkett (and a few barbs at Leo DiCaprio’s expense), the monologue preceded performances from Beyonce and Billie Eilish, the latter of whom took home the win for Best Original Song in No Time To Die

In what is definitely the biggest moment on Oscar night (and perhaps all other Oscar nights combined), Best Actor nominee – and later winner – Will Smith appeared to slap presenter Chris Rock, after the comedian joked about Smith’s wife, Jada. The seemingly genuine moment bookended what was an otherwise-textbook night for the Academy, with the only major upset coming in the form of Belfast’s Best Picture win (The Power of The Dog was considered a shoe-in).
