A feature-length version of Community is upon us; so who’s in and who’s out?

Last week, US streaming service Peacock confirmed that it is producing a feature-length reboot of the long-running sitcom, Community. The currently untitled movie will come 15 years after the series finale of Community, which ran for six seasons and chronicled the exploits of a study group at Greendale Community College.

The film reboot comes after years of teasing from the cast and crew, with Community creator Dan Harmon having teased the show’s comeback since 2016. In the time since, Harmon and Childish Gambino (who played Troy Barnes on the show), have both pitched ideas for a long-awaited reboot, while lead actor Joel McHale referenced the show’s running joke about ‘six seasons and a movie’ in a recent cryptic Tweet.

While details around the plot of the upcoming reboot remain scarce, Peacock has confirmed which actors will reprise their roles in the Community film, the release date for which remains as-yet unknown. Ahead of the movie’s premiere, we’re trawling through all the castmates to see who is (and isn’t) returning for the Community movie

Who’s in: Joel McHale (Jeff Winger).

Community’s main character Jeff Winger (portrayed by Joel McHale) will make his return in the reboot, with Peacock leading their announcement with McHale’s name. The actor portrayed Winger — a disbarred lawyer and the creator of the study group — across the show’s entire run, and has long made his interest in a reboot known. Elsewhere, McHale has featured in Spider Man 2 and Ted.

Who’s out: Chevy Chase (Pierce Hawthorne).

Chevy Chase — who played bigoted older student and former handwipe tycoon Pierce Hawthorne — will not return for the Community reboot, not least because his character was revealed to have died in the season five preimere. Behind-the-scenes, Chase was rumoured to have staged a tirade about the direction of his character, and later revealed to Huffington Post that joining the show “was a big mistake” because he had “creative issues with this show.”

Who’s in: Alison Brie (Annie Edison).

Alison Brie has been confirmed to reprisal her role as Annie Edison, the socially-anxious pharmaceutical representative and love interest for Jeff. Brie appeared on the show throughout its entire run, and teased in August of this year that the “wheels are turning” on a film version.

Who’s out: Russo brothers (directors).

Joseph and Anthony Russo, who directed a collection of episodes across Community’s run, will not return to direct the feature film. Dan Harmon revealed at this week’s New York comic-con that the producer duo — who elsewhere directed the final two Avengers films — would be “too busy” to return to the series.

Who’s in: Ken Jeong (Ben Chang).

Ben Chang, the longtime employee at Greendale college, will bring his iconic one-liners back to the Community film. The Spanish teacher, turned security guard, turned maths teacher and Greendale Committee member will be portrayed by Ken Jeong, who earned his breakout role on the show and later went on to scene-stealing status as Mr. Chow in The Hangover franchise.

Who’s (potentially) in: Donald Glover & Yvette Nicole Brown.

While their names weren’t officially announced alongside the returning castmates, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) and Yvette Nicole Brown were suggested to be involved with the reboot by Harmon at NY comic-con. The showrunner revealed that the pair — who played a former jock and sandwich shop owner before departing from the show in season five — were likely absent from the announcement “because the names that are on the list, their deals are agreed upon enough that it’s OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that’s not on a list, it’s just not the case yet.”

Harmon continued: ““I think that Donald is coming, based on word of mouth, but it’s just the deal isn’t official or wasn’t official. It would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald.”

Who’s in: Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs and Jim Rash.

Of the remainder of the main ensemble, Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs and Jim Rash are all confirmed to reappear in the Community movie. Pudi portrayed the studious filmmaker Abed, while Jacobs and Rash played Britta and Craig Pelton, the study group member and Dean of Greendale college respectively. The trio’s return to the show suggests that, should Glover and Brown be officially announced, the Community film will reunite much of the series’ original cast.
