The series lands on Netflix on October 4th…

Amongst the countless household names that have graced a football pitch since the game’s explosion into the mainstream, it’s safe to say that British heartthrob David Beckham has been the biggest by far. Rising through the ranks of the hallowed Manchester United under the tutelage of Sir Alex Ferguson, it seemed all but inevitable that Becks would go on to conquer the game. No one quite expected what came next, however, with Beckham reaching A-List status across the world and becoming an icon in his own right. Now, his story is getting told in a four part Netflix doco (aptly titled Beckham), which is slated to land on October 4th.

Opening with Beckham reflecting, “I never really did well at school because all I wanted to do was play football,” the trailer for the new series quickly brings in a fast-paced violin backing as we’re shown a series of archival footage mixed with interviews with David’s nearest and dearest. We even get a snapshot of his wife, Victoria Beckham, reminiscing on the pair’s car park meet ups when they were first dating (she asserts that it wasn’t as seedy as it sounds).

It culminates with Beckham stressing that his fame “Definitely didn’t change me”, to which Sir Alex Ferguson hilariously replies, “It definitely changed him.” And yes, Becks goes into that infamous shoe encounter with his former coach in the trailer as well, which will no doubt be one of the most hotly talked about parts of the show.

Following this, the doco quickly flashes through some of his lowest points and scandals, with even shots of his Manchester home crowd booing him at one point. However, Beckham seems to ultimately be a story of inspiration and motivation, with the remaining trailer showing his various triumphs on and off the pitch and the eventual birth of his kids Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.

It ends with a young Becks (or could be the long lost member of 90s boy band Hanson, we’re not sure) cheekily teasing the audience as he says in an interview “You haven’t seen nothing yet”, with the trailer coming to a close soon after. It’s an intriguing insight into a character most people, for all intents and purposes, thought that they already had the measure of. Who knows what revelations will come to light about him when it drops on October 4th. Check out the full trailer for Beckham below.
