One hell of a paycheque…

We’re all familiar with the ‘Disaster Girl’ meme. It’s a timeless piece of culture that’s been used through the years to explain and hilariously embody some of the craziest shit to happen in and beyond our lifetimes. From edits of the dinosaurs being wiped out to the Titanic sinking in the background, the meme has truly seen it all; the calm, devilish grin of a young four year old as a house went up in flames behind her instantly resonatinv with the masses, and now, it’s resulted in a huge paycheque.

Specifically, the meme was just sold as an NFT for 180 Ether, which is of course, a form of cryptocurrency. As it goes with crypto, the value of the currency constantly fluctuates, but the most recent valuation of it had it at around $500,000 USD ($640,000 AUD). However, the Roths will retain the copyright and will receive 10% of future sales, so this isn’t the end of their meme income.

Speaking on how the meme has affected her life since it was born in 2005, Roth said “People who are in memes and go viral is one thing, but just the way the internet has held on to my picture and kept it viral, kept it relevant, is so crazy to me,” she said. “I’m super grateful for the entire experience.”

Pretty surreal. Check out some iterations of the iconic meme below.
