All we need is Dwayne in the lead role and we’re good…

Prepare yourselves for some rowdy AF adventure with some killer coats and spears, as Dwayne Johnson is working on a reboot of The Scorpion King, one of his earliest roles. Johnson, who has dozens of films and projects in the works at any one time, is set to produce the film via his production company Seven Bucks Productions, with Universal overseeing the project.

In case it’s been a while since you watched the original film, the 2002 epic followed Johnson’s character Mathayus, a desert warrior who unleashes mayhem on an evil army who’s set on destroying his homeland. Fun fact, but the film was actually a spin off from The Mummy franchise, and went on to seriously kill in the box office.

Interestingly, the reboot is said to be set in the modern day, which honestly has us super stumped, as, you know, the film’s setting was more ancient than ancient. But no doubt with Jonathan Herman (who wrote Straight Outta Compton) and Johnson working on a script, we can expect some pretty fantastic storylines in this beauty.

Speaking on the announcement, Johnson said “The Scorpion King was my very first role ever on the silver screen and I’m honoured and excited to reimagine and deliver this cool mythology to a whole new generation,” Johnson said.

“I wouldn’t have had the career I’m lucky enough to have had it not been for The Scorpion King and I’m thrilled that we at Seven Bucks Productions can help create those same opportunities for other hard working actors today. I believe Jonathan Herman will put in the hard work to deliver a fantastic script for our global audience.”

Well, it definitely sounds like Dwayne won’t be in the lead role, but if he’s serving as a producer on the film, then it’ll definitely have that special magic inherent to the 2002 original. And who knows, maybe he’ll make a sneaky cameo as well. For now, check out the trailer from the OG film below.
