News broke over the weekend that veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio are reteaming for an upcoming survival story titled The Wager. It will mark the pair’s seventh film together, and will follow their hotly-anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, which is expected to premiere next year.
The rights to the film were purchased by Apple TV, who’s filmography currently includes Best Picture winner CODA, among others. Only DiCaprio has been attached to star, and the film hasn’t yet received a screenplay. While details of the survival epic are relatively sparse, we’ve compiled everything we know so far about Marty and Leo’s upcoming collaboration, The Wager.
The Wager is based on the true story of a 1700s shipwreck, in which 30 men were left stranded on a remote island in South America’s Patagonia region. Chronicling their tales of survival and Lord of the Flies-like descension into anarchy, The Wager will also cover the resulting trial led, by the British Admiralty, to uncover exactly what went down on the island.
David Grann’s upcoming nonfiction book, The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder will form the basis of Scorsese’s film adaptation. Set for release next year, the book offers a historical account of the shipwreck and Admiralty trial, and marks the second time Scorsese has adapted a Grann novel for the silver screen. The upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, which also stars DiCaprio, was also based on one of Grann’s 2017 books.
Apple purchased the film rights to Green’s novel, meaning The Wager will add to the streaming service’s already buzzy filmography. Last year, Apple TV became the first streaming service to win an Oscar for Best Picture for its drama film CODA, and the company looks to keep the trophies coming with a slew of originals in the works. Perhaps Apple’s most anticipated upcoming film is the currently-untitled project from Damien Chazelle, who’s directed films La La Land and Whiplash, among others.
Upon its release, The Wager will mark Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio’s seventh film together, with the latter first appearing in Scorsese’s 2002 film Gangs of New York. Since then, DiCaprio has starred in The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street and the aforementioned Killers of the Flower Moon. All up, the pair’s films have been nominated for thirty-one Academy Awards, with their five collaborations bringing in a total of $1.3 billion in earnings.

Set to premier at Canne and Venice Film Festival next year, the Scorsese-directed, DiCaprio-starring Killers Of The Flower Moon is also based on a David Grann novel. Released in 2017, the novel recounts the serial killing spree of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror. Alongside DiCaprio, Killers Of The Flower Moon boasts a starry ensemble including Brenden Fraser, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, and other frequent Scorsese collaborator Robert De Niro.
