McConaughey’s gotten a bit of a makeover…

Seasoned detective lord, Benecio Del Toro, is once again in the murder mystery drivers seat, starring in Netflix’s new thriller Reptile alongside Alicia Silverstone and Mr. Sexyback himself, Justin Timberlake.

The trailer kicks off with del Toro stepping into the shoes of a seasoned detective, summoned to the scene of his latest investigation. The plot revolves around the demise of a young real estate agent. Naturally, the prime suspect is the mourning boyfriend, played by JT. It’s a classic move straight out of the true crime playbook. Timberlake’s character, however, isn’t falling for that cliche’d trap. He diverts attention towards a motley crew of potential culprits, including the victim’s ex-husband, a loyal confidante and a stranger whose last interaction with the deceased gives everyone the ick. Together, Del Toro and Silverstone attempt to find their way through it all, albeit through a haze of dramatic dialogue, anxiety-inducing close ups that will definitely play upon any normal person’s need for personal space.

Aside from the obvious parallels to the beloved True Detective (haze of smoke and mirrors, emotionally and spiritually desolate setting and a pair of detectives that are impossible not to root for), the upcoming series also has a bit of added nostalgia, with leads Del Toro and Silverstone reuniting for the first time since 1997’s Excess Baggage. Except, we’re guessing Reptile isn’t going to be going the romantic comedy route like the pair’s first cinematic foray (and if it is, Netflix has got some massive balls).

It’s one of the most promising titles Netflix has teased in recent months, and judging by the first trailer, we’d say the hype is well-deserved. Check out the full trailer for Reptile below.
