Still waiting for a sequel to this classic…

It’s that special time of week again. You know, the time where we search the various streaming services in the hope of finding a flick to chuck on for our Wednesday nights. Last week was the 2001 love-letter to cocaine Blow, but tonight, you’ll be watching the 2010 classic Get Him to the Greek.

Featuring an all-star cast including Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and numerous more Hollywood heavyweights, the 2010 film follows music-exec Aaron Green (played by Hill) on his seemingly-impossible quest to get drug-riddled rock star Aldous Snow (played by Brand) to Los Angeles for a concert. It was definitely a crowd-favourite when it was released in 2010, and much to our collective relief, it still holds up all of these years later.

And so, we’ve mad an executive decision. You’re jumping on YouTube tonight and chucking on the 2010 classic Get Him to the Greek. Thank us later, and remember: stroke the furry wall.

The birth of the ‘mindfuck’

There’s no question that the term ‘mindfuck’ is something of a staple in the English language nowadays. It’s ability to be used as an adjective, verb and noun to describe, well, someone who’s mind is well and truly fucked is pretty much unmatched. But it all started from this scene right here, Diddy’s riveting explanation of the psychological tool subsequently launching it into pop culture.

Diddy’s meltdowns

Speaking of old mate Diddy, prior to watching him in Get Him To The Greek, I don’t think anyone really thought of him as anything more than an esteemed hip hop executive, much less a proper actor. But alas, his performance ended up being one of the standouts of the film. And aside from his philosophical monologues regarding the art of the ‘mindfuck’, his affinity for losing his shit on camera was bloody glorious.

Russell Brand’s surprisingly-decent singing voice?

Don’t get me wrong, he’s no Freddie Mercury and the rock songs Russell Brand sings in this film definitely aren’t the type of tracks I’d be bumping in my spare time, but you can’t deny he’s got a decent set of pipes on him. Fun fact: when learning how to sing for the film, Brand’s vocal coach actually helped him perfect his singing of the phrase “Blowjobs”, which he puts to great use on the Graham Norton Show below.

The British accent

We all have tried our hand at the good old British slight of tongue when we’ve had a couple, and of course, they’re always the most ridiculous incarnation possible. Get Him to the Greek seems to be compiled of these very accents, consequentially making every British character in the film sound way more ratchet than they probably are. Case in point: Rose Byrne as drug-obsessed pom Jackie Q below.

The drugs

Obviously I’m not condoning their use in the film, but the sheer amount (and variety) of drugs displayed in this badboy is pretty ridiculous. In all honesty, it was bloody hard narrowing down a clip for this one, but Russell Brand forcing Jonah Hill to sneak some rack up his rectum is a personal favourite. Shoutout to any fellow poor soul who has had to violate themselves for a cheeky bender.
