It’s settled. Snatch is on the menu tonight.

Scanning your streaming service trying to decide how you’re gonna spend your evening? Well, we’ve made an executive decision to alleviate some of the mind-numbing scrolling for you. Tonight you oughta be watching Guy Ritchie’s 2000 gangster comedy Snatch. Starring Jason Statham, Stephen Graham, Brad Pitt, Benicio del Toro and a handful of other recognisable faces, the film marked the pinnacle of Ritchie’s career, expanding on the crime-geezer style he introduced to the world with his breakthrough film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Clearly influenced by Tarantino’s conversational dialogue and interweaving storylines, the film is about a diamond, a boxer, a slew of underworld figures, a couple of promoters and a dog. It’s a proper riot that serves up more quotable lines than a season of The Simpsons, and if you (or your partner, housemates etc) need more convincing than that, check out five reasons why you should (re)watch Snatch below:

Hooked from the credits.

Maybe it’s the super 90s-sounding heist music, or the fact that introducing the cast feels like something a soapie like Neighbours would do, or simply that you know you’re in for a couple of hours of quality entertainment… whatever it is, as soon as these credits hit, it feels like coming home.

Brad Pitt should’ve got an Academy Award for this.

Did anyone else feel like Brad Pitt was good and not great in Once Upon A Time I Hollywood? It was a “cool” performance, but it didn’t feel like he had to work super hard to get his long-overdue Academy Award. In Snatch, however, he’s fucking electric. Stealing every scene, expressing everything with his body and face while he spews out gibberish from his mouth, and never missing a comedic beat – it’s a pretty impressive performance, and a better one than OUTIH… IMO.

The one-liners.

Much like Lock, Stock, the characters of Snatch serve up a boatload of comebacks, disses and cockney slang that are still getting slapped around today. Whether it’s Bricktop’s (Alan Ford) “Sweet enough” line or Turkish’s (Statham) bullying of the dimwitted Tommy (Stephen Graham), it feels like a lot of this movie made it into our regular vocabulary.

It’s got the perfect balance.

There’s so many different little threads going on in Snatch that it’s hard to really keep up. Cherry-picking the best parts from film genres such as sports, comedy, horror, heist and mafia/crime, it ticks all the boxes for the young, (let’s face it) mostly male moviegoer.

He’s useless, he’s fat, he Ty-fucking-rone.
