In honour of Earth week, which kicks off next month, Byron Bay metal band In Hearts Wake have debuted the trailer for their upcoming environmental documentary, Green Is The New Black. The clip, which was released today alongside the announcement of screening dates across Australia and abroad, follows the eco-minded band during the development of their 2020 LP, Kaliyuga, an album which has since become known for its 100% carbon offset status.
Amidst the band’s quest to become a wholly carbon neutral organisation, Green Is The New Black will – with input from experts and industry professionals – also chronicle the tenuous relationship between the music industry and the environment more broadly, set against the backdrop of Australia’s 2020 bushfires and released during the country’s ongoing flood crisis.

Speaking of the project, In Hearts Wake vocalist Jake Taylor said the film forced reflection on the impact of musical acts like theirs on the environment. “When we first started this band, we just wanted to tour the world and play music. But the further we travelled, the more it hit home. We were unintentionally endangering our own future,” Taylor says.
Green Is The New Black will first debut at Bangalow Film Festival on April 12, before hitting Palace Cinemas across Australia with additional screenings in Los Angeles, Toronto and London. All ticket sales from the film’s opening night will go directly to the Northern Rivers flood recovery.
