Joker 2 aka Joker: Folie a Deux will be hitting screens October 4, 2024, and this time around, it’s going to be a musical… for some reason unknown to us…
Joker 2 is set to follow the story of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) after he transforms into the Joker. Phoenix is expected to deliver yet another weird-ass, award-baiting performance, portraying the creepy and unhinged Joker. Early shots from the movie set have already surfaced, showing Phoenix in character, with a gaunt frame and a pale complexion that resembles his previous performance.

As if that’s not enough, we’ll also get to see Lady Gaga joining the cast of Joker 2 as Harleen Quinzel, a psychiatrist who treats Arthur Fleck in some capacity during the movie. It’s not clear if she’ll eventually become Harley Quinn, the Joker’s sidekick, but Lady Gaga’s inclusion in the cast suggests that this sequel will be filled with A-list talent and may even get a bit crazy.
Zazie Beetz, who played Sophie Drummond in the first Joker movie, is also expected to make a return. Sophie was Arthur Fleck’s neighbor and love interest in the first movie, and her story was the true insight into how far Fleck’s mind had deteriorated into madness. Though they didn’t really know each other in the first movie, there’s speculation that Sophie will have a more prominent role in the sequel.
The fact that Joker 2 will have musical elements is an unexpected twist in the news surrounding the movie. The original movie had music as a core element of the story and tone-setting, and it even won an Academy Award for its soundtrack. Lady Gaga’s casting makes it all the more exciting, as we know she’s not only a great actress but also an incredible musician. There’s no word on how the music will fit into the plot, but farrrrk, if they can make a musical and it not be lame, it will be a massive achievement.
In other news, it has been confirmed that Joker 2 will be part of the DC Elseworlds, a series of alternate universe stories exploring what could have happened if certain events didn’t occur. James Gunn, who is directing The Suicide Squad for the DC Cinematic Universe, has confirmed that movies like this version of Joker and the upcoming Robert Pattinson Batman will continue to be part of the DC Elseworlds… Which basically means they can continue to exploit the IP from all angles, guaranteeing the money will keep rolling in.
