Beginning to lose track of how many Matilda reboots there have been…

In what’s sure to be welcome news to Roald Dahl adherents across the world, the most iconic work from the illustrious author, Matilda The Musical, is getting another reboot, this time courtesy of Netflix. And today we’ve gotten our first look at the upcoming film, which stars Alisha Weir as the titular character British actress Emma Thompson as antagonist Miss Trunchball.

Other notable castings include No Time To Die star Lashana Lynch as everyone’s favourite teacher Miss Honey, along with Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseboroug as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood. All of the above feature in the new teaser, which casts a rather bleak tone which Emma Thompson’s villain is no doubt the architect of. The musical numbers are equally intense as well, striking a confronting balance between Glee and La La Land that somehow adds to the overall terror that permeates Crunchem Hall Elementary School.

It all culminates in the final scene whereby Trunchbowl swings a child by their pigtails far off into the distance, with her hilarious ordering of her subordinates to check as to whether “that child is still alive”. It’s definitely a film that straddles the line between comedy, horror and musical, but alas, it works. Check the full trailer below.
