Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier looks to address some of these quandaries with his latest effort, The Worst Person In The World. The film stars Renate Reinsve as Julie, a thirty-year-old living in bustling Oslo who dips in and out of love, careers, and daydreams. This existential tour de force gracefully interweaves a myriad of small moments into a detailed tapestry of modern life. Trier has created a work that dares to ask the big questions and maybe even more bravely refuses to answer them. Instead, he’s more concerned with exploring the contrast in life and how they relate to each other. By the time the credits roll, you’ll feel like you’ve grown with Julie. Her joys and pains will weigh on you with the comfort of a head resting on your shoulder.
The Worst Person In The World has been showered with critical and audience praise since its 2021 Cannes Film Festival premiere, in which Renate Reinsve won the illustrious ‘Best Actress award’. Recently, the film has been honoured with several end of year mentions and has created palpable buzz for a potential ‘Best International Feature Film’ nomination at the 2022 Academy Awards.
