Out of all of the performances to pass through the box office in 2014, Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of a luded up Wall Street tycoon trying to slither out of his Lamborghini was by far one of the standouts. It was one of the many scenes from the biographical epic that fielded praise, however, for some reason, it’s one of the few from the film that’s been burned into the collective consciousness of cinema since. And now, the Lamborghini Countarch that was at the centre of it all is now heading to auction.
For a bit of context, the scene comes about following leading character Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) having a delayed reaction to a bunch of Quaaluudes and driving while under the influence. What we find out later, however, is that the term ‘Driving’ is far too generous a term to the Wolf’s efforts, with the car shown to be wrecked beyond all reason in a subsequent scene. But before said revelation, we’re treated to a hilarious sequence of an incapacitated Leo trying to make his way out of the car and into his mansion. But of course, he fails miserably, and comedy ensures.
Now, following the destruction of its film counterpart, the Lamborghini that’ll be heading to auction on December 8th is the only surviving example from the film. However, this particular iteration features various improvements from its predecessors, courtesy of automotive designer Horacio Pagani.
Gord Duff, the maestro behind RM Sotheby’s auctions, summed it up with a wink and a grin, “Scorsese, DiCaprio, Lamborghini, and New York – it’s like a match made in luxury heaven.” So, buckle up collectors, as the whip is expected to fetch just over $700,000 USD ($1.1 million AUD), as indicated just weeks ago when Sothebys auctioned off a similar car with near identical Specs. For now, check out some shots of the car above, along with the iconic scene from Wolf of Wall Street below.
