It’s no secret that the housing market is fucked central right now for anyone who can’t fall back on the bank of mum and dad. Stagnant wage growth and soaring property prices have meant that young Aussies’ only chance of owning a decent home involves either a death in the family or a move out to Shitsville – and that’s for a “fixer-upper”. But what if we told you for $340K you could get something that isn’t a tiny one-bedroom in a suburb where you’re more likely to get stabbed than receive a wave from one of your neighbours?
The former mining town of Lappa is about 130 clicks inland of Cairns and features three 120-year-old buildings: a museum and BYO pub; a church turned residential house and the charming fully-restored Lappa Railway Station. It also has off-grid solar power and satellite NBN internet, so you have the ability to post complaints on the council website when you want to get shit down around town (downside is you’ll have to do it yourself, but still).
“What am I going to do in Lappa?” you say. Well, there’s a supposedly beautiful seasonal creek and a waterfall that is a mere 10 minutes away so you can spend your time frolicking in the water as you wait for tourists to come visit. A potential tourism boom is where current owner Tim Prater believes the money is at. “There is still work to be done to restore Lappa. The reward on completion is a perfectly placed stop for visitors to the Chillagoe Caves as well as a potential Lions Den of the Western Tablelands connected to Cairns via bitumen highway,” he says.
Check out the pics and tell me that you aren’t at least semi-interested in owning your own town (even if it is a little crap). Hit up Mr Prater on his FB here if you’re ready to make an offer:
