Guessing Spice Girl Geri Halliwell Horner wasn’t his mum in the OG story…

Ever played a video game from the comfort of your own home and think, “I could do this in real life!” UK racer Jann Mardenborough had the same thought after playing popular racing game, Gran Turismo, in the early 2010s, except, he was actually able to make the jump into pro-racing. Now, fast forward over a decade later, and they’re making a movie about old mate’s rise to the top of the popular sport.

Named after the iconic game, the film gives us a glimpse into Mardenborough’s (played by UK actor Archie Madekwe) ascension into the big time, with the second trailer for the upcoming epic following Mardenborough’s winning of the GT Academy, which allowed 90,000 gamers to try to become a professional racing driver. Paired with a failed racer driver in David Harbour and an idealistic motorsport executive in Orlando Bloom, the film version of Mardenborough quickly rises through the ranks, despite protests from his working class parents (played by Djimon Hounsou and Spice Girl Geri Horner).

It sounds like the sort of overblown CGI fest that the Fast & Furious franchise has made a killing off in recent years, but the trailer manages to balance both drama and action with ease, with the two-and-a-half minute trailer showing realistic chase sequences and stunts interwoven with a gripping plot centred around Mardenborough and the machinations around him. And in a neat twist, the real Jann appears in the movie as well, taking the wheel for the more intense, out of camera racing sequences. Add the fact that the filmmakers have also promised hyper-detailed flashes inside tiny racing cockpits and unique video-game inspired racing POV shots that any Gran Turismo or Need For Speed player knows all too well, and there’s a little something for all gearheads in the new film.
