Acting, much like music, is such a subjective thing – some people just love certain actors and they don’t know why, while some people can’t stand certain actors for no reason. Nicolas Cage has always been a bit of a divider amongst audiences, some consider him a genius, others believe he’s terrible, many love him ironically. His ‘overacting’ style has spawned many gifs and memes, and with the MANDY trailer, we get to see true ‘Cage’ in all its glory.
The film, which is set in the early 80’s, follows the story of a man living in the Pacific Northwest (Cage) whose wife (Andrea Riseborough) is kidnapped by a cult with a sadistic and ultra creepy leader (Jeremiah Sand). As you can expect this sets Cage’s character off on a blood-soaked quest for vengence, with some sort of weird axe.
The shots look incredible too, with director Panos Cosmatos creating an enchantingly spooky visceral landscape that is rich in reds, purples and greens. Though let’s face it, the best part of the trailer is when cage delivers the line “Crazy, evil,” and then goes on to fully let ‘The Cage’ out of the cage.
The film, which so far has a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, will hit American cinemas in September. No word on the Australian release date yet.
